The old washing line pole in the middle of the garden has been bugging me for a while. Here it is in February, in the snow.
We thought "Sure, how difficult can it be to dig out. Usually these things have a ball of concrete around them, about a foot down". So, while we had a skip, we started digging.
We ended up a bit more than a foot down...
It didn't stand *that* much taller than N. All but a foot below the bed was underground.
How did we get it out. Well, N dug a really big hole. Finally it started moving and was rocked into a 45 degree angle. After being attacked with a lump hammer, it was bend, so it was parallel to the ground. Then N got the jack from his car, jacked up the bit above ground and used it as a lever to get the bottom half out the ground.
We have a bit of a dip in the lawn, but its now gone.

New fence
We very nearly lost a fence panel during the storms in March, so after much procastination, we decided it was time to start the process of replacing it. The back section, which is in any case in better condition, will have to wait until more of the undergrowth is cleared, but the first half is in. Took us two days to paint them but the panels literally went in while I was out with L and his cousin J fetching lunch.
The old fence, first panel down and peeking through to next door's washing line.
The panels are supposed to be "Autumn Cedar" - a sort of reddy-brown. I'm finding them a bit bright at the moment!
We imported foreign child labour ;-)
Finished fence. I do hope my clematis survives having been detached from one fence and reattached to the other.
While uploading them I came across this, from two months ago today!
